Strengthening Communities Through Responsible Enterprise
Introduction
Businesses play an essential role in the communities in which they operate. Beyond generating economic activity and employment, businesses shape local relationships, opportunities, and shared spaces.
When organisations operate responsibly and with a clear sense of purpose, they can make a powerful contribution to stronger, more connected communities.
The Strengthening Communities Through Responsible Enterprise initiative explores how businesses can actively support community cohesion and resilience while strengthening their own long-term sustainability.
GSB Foundation is developing a framework that helps organisations understand how responsible enterprise practices can deliver meaningful benefits for both communities and businesses.
What We Are Developing
GSB Foundation is working to develop a Responsible Enterprise Framework that will help organisations translate their intentions into meaningful action.
The initiative will focus on three key areas:
Research and Insight
Understanding the role businesses already play in supporting communities and identifying opportunities for greater impact through responsible enterprise practices.
Practical Action Framework
Developing practical guidance and examples that help organisations strengthen their relationships with the communities in which they operate.
Measuring Social Impact
Providing tools and approaches that enable businesses to understand, measure and communicate the positive impact they create.
A Collaborative Approach
This initiative is being developed through collaboration between businesses, policymakers, researchers and community organisations.
By working together across sectors, we aim to create a framework that is practical, accessible and widely adopted.
Why This Initiative Matters
Communities thrive when people are connected, opportunities are shared and organisations contribute positively to the places in which they operate.
Businesses already influence communities in many ways, including through:
employment and workplace culture
investment and supply chains
relationships with local organisations
the products and services they provide
However, many organisations want to contribute more intentionally to the communities around them but lack clear guidance on how to do so.
This initiative aims to address that gap by developing practical guidance that helps businesses integrate community impact into their everyday operations.
How Businesses Can Contribute
Responsible enterprise can strengthen communities in many ways. Examples include:
building long-term partnerships with community organisations
supporting employee volunteering and skills-based contributions
creating inclusive workplaces that reflect the diversity of local communities
supporting local entrepreneurs and supply chains
investing in spaces and initiatives that bring communities together
Many businesses already contribute in these ways. The aim of this initiative is to make these contributions more visible, more intentional, and more impactful.
We are currently engaging with organisations that want to help shape this initiative and demonstrate how responsible enterprise can strengthen communities.
If you would like to explore collaboration opportunities, we would welcome hearing from you.
